Consumer Rights & Responsibilities

At United Local Movers, we believe that a safe and honest move starts with clear information.
If your move crosses state lines, we follow the rules of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and are required to provide you with specific brochures and notices about your rights and responsibilities when you move.

This page brings all of that information together in one place so you always know where to find the official documents and how to verify our credentials.

Required FMCSA Brochures and Materials

1. “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”

Before we load your shipment for an interstate move, we are required to give you the official FMCSA booklet “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”.

In this booklet, you will find:

  • your rights as a consumer when hiring a moving company;

  • your responsibilities when preparing for the move;

  • how estimates, the Bill of Lading, and inventories work;

  • information about carrier liability and claims for loss or damage;

  • what to do if you have a problem or dispute with your mover.

We strongly recommend that you read this booklet carefully before your move.

You can access the official booklet on the FMCSA website:

2. Arbitration Program Brochure

FMCSA requires interstate movers to offer a neutral arbitration program for certain types of disputes, such as disagreements over loss, damage, or some charges.

United Local Movers participates in an arbitration program so that, if needed, you can submit an unresolved dispute to a neutral third party instead of going directly to court.

In the Arbitration Program Brochure, you will find:

  • what types of disputes may be eligible for arbitration;

  • how to file an arbitration claim;

  • how the process works and typical timelines;

  • possible outcomes and limitations of the program.

You can review the official FMCSA Arbitration Program brochure here:

3. “Ready to Move?” – Pre-Move Checklist Brochure

Before you sign any documents, FMCSA requires that we share the “Ready to Move?” brochure with you.

This brochure is a simple, practical checklist that covers:

  • key questions to ask your mover;

  • what to look for in written estimates;

  • how to recognize warning signs of fraud or rogue movers;

  • what you should do before, during, and after your move;

  • where to find more official resources and help.

It also reminds you to verify that your mover is properly registered with FMCSA.

You can read the official brochure here:

FMCSA Registration and USDOT Verification

As a consumer, you have the right to check whether your mover is properly registered with FMCSA and has an active USDOT number and operating authority.

We openly provide our registration details so you can verify them directly on the official FMCSA website.

Our Registration Information

You can verify our company’s status and safety record using FMCSA’s SAFER system:

Check us on the FMCSA website

On that page, you can confirm:

  • that we are registered as an interstate motor carrier;

  • our USDOT and MC numbers;

  • our operating status;

  • public safety and compliance information.

We encourage every customer to verify any mover they are considering.

FMCSA Consumer Rights & Responsibilities Resources

FMCSA maintains a dedicated section for consumers called “Consumer Rights & Responsibilities”, where you can learn more about your protections when you move.

On that page, you will find:

  • what documents movers must provide before and after your move;

  • your rights in case of loss, damage, or disputes;

  • how to file a complaint against a mover;

  • additional tools to help you protect your move.

You can visit the FMCSA consumer page here:
